In search of new ideas?

22 08 2009

A few weeks ago I facilitated two retreats, both on sunny,  summer Fridays.  Both were with people that I know well, enjoy, and care deeply about.  The first was the annual Board Retreat for WWIN,  a non-profit organization doing great work in great ways. The second was a large group of my first cousins, as we met to plan our family reunion next summer. Hey, when over 100 people come to your reunion, you have to play ahead!

Reflecting back on both days, I’m struck by how much can be accomplished in a short time when people with a common goal and purpose come together and allow ideas to flow freely.   In both settings, new and fresh ideas emerged and evolved……ideas that I never would have thought up on my own.  And that’s the point, isn’t it?

So if you find yourself stuck and in need of some new ideas in some area of your life, maybe you need to plan your own retreat!  Why not gather a few people you know and trust together and invite them to lunch or have them over for dinner.  Ask them to help you spend one focused hour brainstorming ideas on your topic of choice.  You might just be amazed at what new ideas come to light!

“Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes
US author & physician (1809 – 1894)
